Gnomish Lineage Branches

Bobs & Tobs

Bobs & Tobs are known for their natural talents for craftsmanship. in the modern era, this has allowed a few (mostly bobs) to rise to the ranks of captains of industry disrupting millennia-old social structures and forming a new sort of nobility derogatively referred to as “new money”.

Bobs and Tobs are largely indistinguishable to non-gnomes and gnomes often find it frustratingly difficult to properly articulate the difference without resorting to descriptions of clothing or tools. Bob guild families have a tendency to be more mechanically inclined than tob guild families who tend toward more traditional crafts.

Artificer’s Lore. Whenever you make a Brilliance check related to magic items, alchemical objects, or technological devices, you can roll with expertise. If you have expertise in the relevant skill, you instead make the roll with advantage.

Clever Pockets. Unless completely stripped of all possessions and clothing, you can always produce something that can be used as a quality 0 tool or weapon with which you are proficient. This tool or weapon is fragile, causing it to break as a result of rolling snake eyes on while utilizing it. If you have expertise with the tool or weapon, it’s quality is 1.

Language. You can speak, read, and write elvish or dwarven.

Background Features

  • Mechanical Inclination. Whenever your archetype allows you to select proficiencies or expertise from a list, you can select a tool instead. You can replace any background skill proficiency or expertise with a tool proficiency or expertise.

Differentiating between Bobs & Tobs

The difference between bob and tob is a social construct. Any traits consistently associated with one or the other usually stem from experiences with specific guild families. Magical effects that only effect bobs also effect tobs and vice versa.

Gob

Descended from bobs and hobs touched by the roiling chaos gobs have accumulated numerous unfavorable nicknames. While the first gobs were born after the shattering of the Faewylds, a few hob and bob parents are still sometimes horrified when their children are both with green skin and batlike features.

Lacking their own guild families, gobs attach to whatever culture they can. As such, the vast majority of gobs flock to the frontier worlds where their unusual nature is less notable. The rare gobs who live and affiliate with their bob and hob kin are often known as tobgoblins, bobgoblins and hobgoblins.

Many gobs turn to a life of crime finding their natural ability to avoid pass through barriers particularly lucrative.

Mad Dash. When you take the sprint action, you can use your Instinct score for your Athletics roll. When you do, you instantly teleport to a destination you can see in range and are not limited by conventional movement restrictions. You leave behind footprints and a normal trail as if you’d run through the intervening space and onlookers process your movement as an unstoppable blur. This can result in oddities like footprints leading up or down vertical walls. You can do this a number of times per day equal to one third of your level (rounded up).

Language. You can speak, read, and write goblin.

Hob

Also known as cottage, country, or garden gnomes depending on status and profession, hobs are more at peace in the rural countrysides that still remain outside the civilization centers of Telluria.

Most old money gnomes are hobs content to live on their estates away from the complications of city life. They may not generally be as clever as bobs, but most aren’t afraid to put in good-old-fashioned hard work.
